| கடவுள் வாழ்த்து - In Praise of God
1.அகர முதல எழுத்தெல்லாம் ஆதி
பகவன் முதற்றே உலகு.
"A" is the first and source of all the letters. Even so is God Primordial the first and source of all the world.
2.கற்றதனால் ஆய பயனென்கொல் வாலறிவன்
நற்றாள் தொழாஅர் எனின்.
What has learning profited a man, if it has not led him To worship the Good Feet of Him who is pure knowledge itself?
3.மலர்மிசை ஏகினான் மாணடி சேர்ந்தார்
நிலமிசை நீடுவாழ் வார்.
The Supreme dwells within the lotus of the heart. Those who reach His Splendid Feet dwell endearingly within unearthly realms.
4.வேண்டுதல் வேண்டாமை இலானடி சேர்ந்தார்க்கு
யாண்டும் இடும்பை இல.
Draw near the Feet of Him who is free of desire and aversion. And live forever free of suffering.
5.இருள்சேர் இருவினையும் சேரா இறைவன்
பொருள்சேர் புகழ்புரிந்தார் மாட்டு.
Good and bad, delusion's dual deeds, do not disturb Those who delight in praising the immutable, worshipful One.
6.பொறிவாயில் ஐந்தவித்தான் பொய்தீர் ஒழுக்க
நெறிநின்றார் நீடுவாழ் வார்.
A long and joyous life rewards those is theirs who remain firmly On the faultless path of Him who controls the five senses.
7.தனக்குவமை இல்லாதான் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால்
மனக்கவலை மாற்றல் அரிது.
They alone dispel the mind's distress Who take refuge at the Feet of the Incomparable One.
8.அறவாழி அந்தணன் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால்
பிறவாழி நீந்தல் அரிது.
They alone can cross life's other oceans who take refuge at the Feet of the Gracious One, Himself an ocean of virtue.
9.கோளில் பொறியின் குணமிலவே எண்குணத்தான்
தாளை வணங்காத் தலை.
The head which cannot bow before the Feet of the Possessor Of eight infinite powers resembles eyes which cannot see.
10.பிறவிப் பெருங்கடல் நீந்துவர் நீந்தார்
இறைவன் அடிசேரா தார்.
The immense boundless ocean of births can be crossed, but not Without intimate union with Infinity's Holy Feet.
வான்சிறப்பு - The Importance of Rain
11.வான்நின்று உலகம் வழங்கி வருதலால்
தான்அமிழ்தம் என்றுணரற் பாற்று.
It is the unfailing fall of rain that sustains the world. Therefore, look upon rain as the nectar of life.
12.துப்பார்க்குத் துப்பாய துப்பாக்கித் துப்பார்க்குத்
துப்பாய தூஉம் மழை.
Rain produces man's wholesome food; And rain itself forms part of his food besides.
13.விண்இன்று பொய்ப்பின் விரிநீர் வியனுலகத்து
உள்நின்று உடற்றும் பசி.
Though oceanic waters surround it, the world will be deluged By hunger's hardships if the billowing clouds betray us.
14.ஏரின் உழாஅர் உழவர் புயல்என்னும்
வாரி வளங்குன்றிக் கால்.
When clouds withhold their watery wealth, Farmers cease to pull their ploughs.
15.கெடுப்பதூஉம் கெட்டார்க்குச் சார்வாய்மற் றாங்கே
எடுப்பதூஉம் எல்லாம் மழை.
It is rain that ruins, and it is rain again That raises up those it has ruined.
16.விசும்பின் துளிவீழின் அல்லால்மற் றாங்கே
பசும்புல் தலைகாண்பு அரிது.
Unless raindrops fall from the sky, Not even green grass will be seen rising from the earth.
17.நெடுங்கடலும் தன்நீர்மை குன்றும் தடிந்தெழிலி
தான்நல்கா தாகி விடின்.
The nature of oceans, though vast, would diminish, If clouds ceased to take up water and give back rain's gifts.
18.சிறப்பொடு பூசனை செல்லாது வானம்
வறக்குமேல் வானோர்க்கும் ஈண்டு.
Should the heavens dry up, worship here of the heavenly ones In festivals and daily rites would wither.
19.தானம் தவம்இரண்டும் தங்கா வியன்உலகம்
வானம் வழங்கா தெனின்.
Unless the heavens grant their gifts, neither the giver's generosity Nor the ascetic's aloofness will grace this wide world.
20.நீர்இன்று அமையாது உலகெனின் யார்யார்க்கும்
வான்இன்று அமையாது ஒழுக்கு.
No life on earth can exist without water, And the ceaseless flow of that water cannot exist without rain.
நீத்தார் பெருமை - Greatness of Renunciates
21.ஒழுக்கத்து நீத்தார் பெருமை விழுப்பத்து
வேண்டும் பனுவல் துணிவு.
The scriptures exalt above every other good The greatness of virtuous renunciates.
22.துறந்தார் பெருமை துணைக்கூறின் வையத்து
இறந்தாரை எண்ணிக்கொண் டற்று.
Attempting to speak of the renunciate's magnitude Is akin to measuring the human multitudes who have ever died.
23.இருமை வகைதெரிந்து ஈண்டுஅறம் பூண்டார்
பெருமை பிறங்கிற்று உலகு.
Behold those who have weighed the dual nature of things and followed The renunciate's way. Their greatness illumines the world.
24.உரனென்னும் தோட்டியான் ஓரைந்தும் காப்பான்
வரனென்னும் வைப்பிற்கோர் வித்தது.
He whose firm will, wisdom's goading hook, controls his five senses Is a seed that will flourish in the fields of heaven.
25.ஐந்தவித்தான் ஆற்றல் அகல்விசும்பு ளார்கோமான்
இந்திரனே சாலுங் கரி.
So great is the power of those who subdue the five senses, even Indra, Sovereign of spacious heaven's celestials, suffered their curse.
26.செயற்கரிய செய்வார் பெரியர் சிறியர்
செயற்கரிய செய்கலா தார்.
The great ones are they who can dispatch the most Difficult tasks; the small ones are they who cannot.
27.சுவைஒளி ஊறுஓசை நாற்றமென ஐந்தின்
வகைதெரிவான் கட்டே உலகு.
Touch, taste, sight, smell and hearing- He who controls these five magically controls the world.
28.நிறைமொழி மாந்தர் பெருமை நிலத்து
மறைமொழி காட்டி விடும்.
Their own secret sayings reveal to the world The greatness of men whose words prove prophetic.
29.குணமென்னும் குன்றேறி நின்றார் வெகுளி
கணமேயும் காத்தல் அரிது.
It is impossible to endure even a moment's wrath of those Who have scaled and stand upon the mountain called virtue.
30.அந்தணர் என்போர் அறவோர்மற் றெவ்வுயிர்க்கும்
செந்தண்மை பூண்டொழுக லான்.
Renunciates are called the priestly ones For they are clothed in robes of compassion for all life.
அறன்வலியுறுத்தல் - Assertion of Virtue's Power
31.சிறப்புஈனும் செல்வமும் ஈனும் அறத்தினூஉங்கு
ஆக்கம் எவனோ உயிர்க்கு.
Virtue yields heaven's honor and earth's wealth. What is there then that is more fruitful for a man?
32.அறத்தினூஉங்கு ஆக்கமும் இல்லை அதனை
மறத்தலின் ஊங்கில்லை கேடு.
There is nothing more rewarding than virtue, Nor anything more ruinous than its neglect.
33.ஒல்லும் வகையான் அறவினை ஓவாதே
செல்லும்வாய் எல்லாஞ் செயல்.
Be unremitting in the doing of good deeds. Do them with all your might and by every possible means.
34.மனத்துக்கண் மாசிலன் ஆதல் அனைத்தறன்
ஆகுல நீர பிற.
Keep the mind free of impurity. That alone is the practice of virtue. All else is nothing but empty display.
35.அழுக்காறு அவாவெகுளி இன்னாச்சொல் நான்கும்
இழுக்கா இயன்றது அறம்.
Virtue is living in such a way that one does not fall into these four- Envy, anger, greed and unsavory speech.
36.அன்றறிவாம் என்னாது அறஞ்செய்க மற்றது
பொன்றுங்கால் பொன்றாத் துணை.
Don't tell yourself tomorrow you'll be wise enough to practice virtue. Do it now for it will be your deathless companion when you die.
37.அறத்தாறு இதுவென வேண்டா சிவிகை
பொறுத்தானோடு ஊர்ந்தான் இடை.
It is decidedly unnecessary to inquire about virtues' benefits, So evident in the difference between the palanquin's rider and bearer.
38.வீழ்நாள் படாஅமை நன்றாற்றின் அஃதொருவன்
வாழ்நாள் வழியடைக்கும் கல்.
Allowing not a day to pass without doing some good is a boulder That will block your passage on the path to future benefits.
39.அறத்தான் வருவதே இன்பம் மற்றெல்லாம்
புறத்த புகழும் இல.
Virtuous deeds alone yield true joy. All other deeds, deprived of dignity, earn naught and end in sorrow.
40.செயற்பால தோரும் அறனே ஒருவற்கு
உயற்பால தோரும் பழி.
Virtue is merely that which should be done, And vice is merely that which men avoid in life.
இல்வாழ்க்கை - Family Life
41.இல்வாழ்வான் என்பான் இயல்புடைய மூவர்க்கும்
நல்லாற்றின் நின்ற துணை.
He alone may be called a householder who supports Those students, elders and renunciates pursuing well their good paths.
42.துறந்தார்க்கும் துவ்வாதவர்க்கும் இறந்தார்க்கும் இல்வாழ்வான்
என்பான் துணை.
The virtuous householder supports the needs Of renunciates, ancestors and the poor.
43.தென்புலத்தார் தெய்வம் விருந்தொக்கல் தானென்றாங்கு
ஐம்புலத்தாறு ஓம்பல் தலை.
The foremost duty of the householder is to duly serve these five: God, guests, kindred, ancestors and himself.
44.பழியஞ்சிப் பாத்தூண் உடைத்தாயின் வாழ்க்கை
வழியெஞ்சல் எஞ்ஞான்றும் இல்.
Gathering wealth without misdeeds and sharing meals without miserliness, The householder's posterity will never perish.
45.அன்பும் அறனும் உடைத்தாயின் இல்வாழ்க்கை
பண்பும் பயனும் அது.
When family life possesses love and virtue, That is both its essence and fruition.
46.அறத்தாற்றின் இல்வாழ்க்கை ஆற்றின் புறத்தாற்றில்
போஒய்ப் பெறுவ எவன்.
If a man masters the immeasurable myriad householder's duties, What further merits could a monk's duties mission bring?
47.இயல்பினான் இல்வாழ்க்கை வாழ்பவன் என்பான்
முயல்வாருள் எல்லாம் தலை.
Among those who strive for liberation, the foremost are they Who live the blessed state of family life as it should be lived.
48.ஆற்றின் ஒழுக்கி அறனிழுக்கா இல்வாழ்க்கை
நோற்பாரின் நோன்மை உடைத்து.
The householder dedicated to duty and to aiding Ascetics on their path of penance endures withstands more than they.
49.அறனென்ப் பட்டதே இல்வாழ்க்கை அஃதும்
பிறன்பழிப்ப தில்லாயின் நன்று.
Domestic life is rightly called virtue. The monastic path, Rightly lived beyond blame, is likewise good.
50.வையத்துள் வாழ்வாங்கு வாழ்பவன் வான்உநற்யும்
தெய்வத்துள் வைக்கப் படும்.
He who pursues the householder's life well here on earth Will be placed among the Gods there in heaven.
வாழ்க்கைத் துணைநலம் - The Good Wife
51.மனைக்தக்க மாண்புடையள் ஆகித்தற் கொண்டான்
வளத்தக்காள் வாழ்க்கைத் துணை.
She is the helpful wife who possesses the fullness of Household culture and spends within her husband's means.
52.மனைமாட்சி இல்லாள்கண் இல்லாயின் வாழ்க்கை
எனைமாட்சித் தாயினும் இல்.
The fullest family life remains empty If the wife lacks the lofty culture of the home.
53.இல்லதென் இல்லவள் மாண்பானால் உள்ளதென்
இல்லவள் மாணாக் கடை.
What does a man lack if his wife is worthy? And what does he possess if she is lacking worth?
54.பெண்ணின் பெருந்தக்க யாவுள கற்பென்னும்
திண்மைஉண் டாகப் பெறின்.
What is more majestic than a women Who commands the copious prodigious strength of chastity?
55.தெய்வம் தொழாஅள் கொழுநன் தொழுதெழுவாள்
பெய்யெனப் பெய்யும் மழை.
Even the rains will fall at the command of the wife Who upon rising worships not God, but her husband.
56.தற்காத்துத் தற்கொண்டாற் பேணித் தகைசான்ற
சொற்காத்துச் சோர்விலாள் பெண்.
She who vigilantly guards herself, fondly secures her husband's needs And protects their unblemished reputation is truly a wife.
57.சிறைகாக்கும் காப்பெவன் செய்யும் மகளிர்
நிறைகாக்கும் காப்பே தலை.
Why do guardians protect women by confinement? Her own Strong-willed staunch chastity is a women's prime supreme protection.
58.பெற்றாற் பெறின்பெறுவர் பெண்டிர் பெருஞ்சிறப்புப்
புத்தேளிர் வாழும் உலகு.
A women deeply devoted to the man who wed her Will be worthy of great rewards in the world where Gods delight
59.புகழ்புரிந்த இல்லிலோர்க்கு இல்லை இகழ்வார்முன்
ஏறுபோல் பீடு நடை.
Unless the wife pursues praiseworthy purity, The husband cannot stride prance like a proud lion before his critics.
60.மங்கலம் என்ப மனைமாட்சி மற்றுஅதன்
நன்கலம் நன்மக்கட் பேறு.
A worthy wife is the blessing of a home, And good children are its precious ornament.
புதல்வரைப் பெறுதல் - The Blessing of Children
61.பெறுமவற்றுள் யாமறிவது இல்லை அறிவறிந்த
மக்கட்பேறு அல்ல பிற.
Of all a man's blessings we know of none greater than The begetting of children endowed with wisdom.
62.எழுபிறப்பும் தீயவை தீண்டா பழிபிறங்காப்
பண்புடை மக்கட் பெறின்.
Those who bear children of blameless character Will themselves be born seven times, untouched by evil.
63.தம்பொருள் என்பதம் மக்கள் அவர்பொருள்
தம்தம் வினையான் வரும்.
It is said that children are a man's real wealth, For his enduring blessings derive from deeds they do on his behalf.
64.அமிழ்தினும் ஆற்ற இனிதேதம் மக்கள்
சிறுகை அளாவிய கூழ்.
Far sweeter than divine nectar is simple boiled rice Stirred by the small hands of one's children.
65.மக்கள்மெய் தீண்டல் உடற்கின்பம் மற்றுஅவர்
சொற்கேட்டல் இன்பம் செவிக்கு.
Being touched by one's children is the body's delight, And listening to their chatters them chatter is joy to the ear.
66.குழல்இனிது யாழ்இனிது என்பதம் மக்கள்
மழலைச்சொல் கேளா தவர்.
"Sweet are the sounds of the flute and the lute," say those Who have not heard the prattle of their own children.
67.தந்தை மகற்காற்று நன்றி அவையத்து
முந்தி இருப்பச் செயல்.
The father's duty to his son is to make him Worthy of precedence in the assembly of the wise.
68.தம்மின்தம் மக்கள் அறிவுடைமை மாநிலத்து
மன்னுயிர்க் கெல்லாம் இனிது.
What pleasure it is to human beings everywhere When their children possess knowledge surpassing their own!
69.ஈன்ற பொழுதின் பெரிதுவக்கும் தன்மகனைச்
சான்றோன் எனக்கேட்ட தாய்.
When a mother hears her son heralded a good and learned man, Her joy exceeds that of his joyous birth.
70.மகன்தந்தைக்கு ஆற்றும் உதவி இவன்தந்தை
என்நோற்றான் கொல்எனும் சொல்.
The son's duty to his father is to make the world ask, "By what great austerities did he merit such a son?"
அன்புடைமை - Possessing Love
71.அன்பிற்கும் உண்டோ அடைக்குந்தாழ் ஆர்வலர்
புன்கணீர் பூசல் தரும்.
Can any lock keep love confined within, When the loving heart's small tears escape and confess it?
72.அன்பிலார் எல்லாம் தமக்குரியர் அன்புடையார்
என்பும் உரியர் பிறர்க்கு.
The unloving belong only to themselves, But the loving belong to others to their very bones.
73.அன்போடு இயைந்த வழக்கென்ப ஆருயிர்க்கு
என்போடு இயைந்த தொடர்பு.
They say it is to know union with love That the soul takes union with the body.
74.அன்புஈனும் ஆர்வம் உடைமை அதுஈனும்
நண்பு என்னும் நாடாச் சிறப்பு.
Love makes a man affectionate toward all, And affection affords the priceless treasure of friendship.
75.அன்புற்று அமர்ந்த வழக்கென்ப வையகத்து
இன்புற்றார் எய்தும் சிறப்பு.
They say love's greatness is this: it yields to good families Worldly happiness here and heavenly bliss there.
76.அறத்திற்கே அன்புசார் பென்ப அறியார்
மறத்திற்கும் அஃதே துணை.
The ignorant declare love only draws us towards virtue, Forgetting love is friend to all immersed in vice.
77.என்பி லதனை வெயில்போலக் காயுமே
அன்பி லதனை அறம்.
As the blazing sun dries up a boneless worm, So does virtue scorch a loveless being.
78.அன்பகத் தில்லா உயிர்வாழ்க்கை வன்பாற்கண்
வற்றல் மரந்தளிர்த் தற்று.
Without love in the heart, Life is like a sapless tree in a barren desert.
79.புறத்துறுப் பெல்லாம் எவன்செய்யும் யாக்கை
அகத்துறுப்பு அன்பி லவர்க்கு.
What good is a body perfect in outer ways, If inwardly it is impaired by lack of love?
80.அன்பின் வழியது உயிர்நிலை அஃதிலார்க்கு
என்புதோல் போர்த்த உடம்பு.
With love enshrined in the heart, one lives. Without it, the body is mere just bone encased in skin.
விருந்தோம்பல் - Hospitality
81.இருந்தோம்பி இல்வாழ்வ தெல்லாம் விருந்தோம்பி
வேளாண்மை செய்தற் பொருட்டு.
The consummate purpose of maintaining a home And earning wealth is to provide hospitality to guests.
82.விருந்து புறத்ததாத் தானுண்டல் சாவா
மருந்தெனினும் வேண்டற்பாற் றன்று.
To hoard one's meal when a guest is in the home Is improper-even if it is the nectar of immortality.
83.வருவிருந்து வைகலும் ஓம்புவான் வாழ்க்கை
பருவந்து பாழ்படுதல் இன்று.
The life of the man who daily cares for those who Come to him will never suffer from poverty's uncaring ruin.
84.அகனமர்ந்து செய்யாள் உறையும் முகனமர்ந்து
நல்விருந்து ஓம்புவான் இல்.
Wealth's goddess dwells in the hospitable home Of one those who hosts guests with a smiling face.
85.வித்தும் இடல்வேண்டும் கொல்லோ விருந்தோம்பி
மிச்சில் மிசைவான் புலம்.
If a man eats only after attending to guests' needs, What further sowing will his fertile fields require?
86.செல்விருந்து ஓம்பி வருவிருந்து பார்த்திருப்பான்
நல்வருந்து வானத் தவர்க்கு.
The host who cares for guests and watches hopefully for more, Will himself be a welcomed guest of those whose home is heaven.
87.இனைத்துணைத் தென்பதொன் றில்லை விருந்தின்
துணைத்துணை வேள்விப் பயன்.
Charity's merit cannot be measured by gifts given. It is measured by measuring the receiver's merits.
88.பரிந்தோம்பிப் பற்றற்றேம் என்பர் விருந்தோம்பி
வேள்வி தலைப்படா தார்.
Those who never sacrifice to care for guests will later lament, "We hoarded wealth, estranged ourselves, now none will care for us."
89.உடைமையுள் இன்மை விருந்தோம்பல் ஓம்பா
மடமை மடவார்கண் உண்டு.
The poorest penury is having plenty but neglecting guests. Such senselessness is only found in senseless fools.
90.மோப்பக் குழையும் அனிச்சம் முகந்திரிந்து
நோக்கக் குநழ்யும் விருந்து.
The delicate anicham flower withers when merely smelled, But an unwelcome look is enough to wither the heart of a guest.
இனியவைகூறல் - Speaking Pleasant Words
91.இன்சொலால் ஈரம் அளைஇப் படிறுஇலவாம்
செம்பொருள் கண்டார்வாய்ச் சொல்.
Pleasant words are those which, full of tenderness And free from deceit, fall from the lips of virtuous men.
92.அகன்அமர்ந்து ஈதலின் நன்றே முகனமர்ந்து
இன்சொலன் ஆகப் பெறின்.
Better than a gift given with a joyous heart Are sweet words spoken with a cheerful smile.
93.முகத்தான் அமர்ந்து இனிதுநோக்கி அகத்தானாம்
இன்சொ லினதே அறம்.
A kindly countenance and sweet words Spoken from the heart-these are virtue's way.
94.துன்புறூஉம் துவ்வாமை இல்லாகும் யார்மாட்டும்
இன்புறூஉம் இன்சொ லவர்க்கு.
Poverty-provoking sorrow will not pursue Those who speak joy-producing words to all they meet.
95.பணிவுடையன் இன்சொலன் ஆதல் ஒருவற்கு
அணியல்ல மற்றுப் பிற.
Humility and pleasant words are the jewels That adorn a man; there are none other.
96.அல்லவை தேய அறம்பெருகும் நல்லவை
நாடி இனிய சொலின்
If a man seeks good works while speaking sweet words, His virtues will wax and his vices wane.
97.நயன்ஈன்று நன்றி பயக்கும் பயன்ஈன்று
பண்பின் தலைப்பிரியாச் சொல்.
Words yield spiritual rewards and moral excellence When they do not wander far from usefulness and agreeableness
98.சிறுமையுவு நீங்கிய இன்சொல் மறுமையும்
இம்மையும் இன்பம் தரும்.
Sweet speech which is stranger to pettiness inparts pleasure Not only in this life, but in the next.
99.இன்சொல் இனிதீன்றல் காண்பான் எவன்கொலோ
வன்சொல் வழங்கு வது.
Why would anyone speak cruel words, Having observed the happiness that kind words confer?
100.இனிய உளவாக இன்னாத கூறல்
கனிஇருப்பக் காய்கவர்ந் தற்று.
To utter harsh words when sweet ones would serve Is like eating unripe fruit when ripe ones are at hand.
செய்ந்நன்றி அறிதல் - Gratitude 101. Voluntary help from unforeseen sources is,
in quantum, worth heaven and earth
101- பொருள் செய்யாமல் செய்த உதவிக்கு வையகமும்
வானகமும் ஆற்றல் அரிது.
102. Help without motives, in an hour of need, though
a little, is greater than the world
102 - பொருள் காலத்தி னாற்செய்த நன்றி சிறிதெனினும்
ஞாலத்தின் மாணப் பெரிது.
103. Help,not weighed down by gains, outweighs
the sea in quality and effects
103 - பொருள் பயன்தூக்கார் செய்த உதவி நயன்தூக்கின்
நன்மை கடலின் பெரிது.
104. Willing help, though a millet in size, benefits
the discerning like a palmyra
104 - பொருள் தினைத்துணை நன்றி செயினும் பனைத்துணையாக்
கொள்வர் பயன்தெரி வார்.
105. Measure not help by the giver, it measures
up to the stature of the beneficiary
105 - பொருள் உதவி வரைத்தன்று உதவி உதவி
செயப்பட்டார் சால்பின் வரைத்து.
106. A friend in need is a friend in deed; do
not forget him nor forsake comrades
106 - பொருள் மறவற்க மாசற்றார் கேண்மை துறவற்க
துன்பத்துள் துப்பாயார் நட்பு.
107. The memory of those who help heal grief and pain,
shall be cherished in gratitude for ever
107 - பொருள் எழுமை எழுபிறப்பும் உள்ளுவர் தங்கண்
விழுமந் துடைத்தவர் நட்பு.
108. Do not be ungrateful, but do forget
the folly of a genuine friend
108 - பொருள் நன்றி மறப்பது நன்றன்று நன்றல்லது
அன்றே மறப்பது நன்று.
109. Let not your mind be wounded cruelly by a friend;
think of the good deeds he is worth
109 - பொருள் கொன்றன்ன இன்னா செயினும் அவர்செய்த
ஒன்றுநன்று உள்ளக் கெடும்.
110. Other virtues may be trampled in meritless
life; no one can survive ingratitude
